VICTORY! Feds will reconsider protecting the vulnerable chub

Roundtail and headwater chubs are important indicator species for their current and historic habitat in the rivers of eastern Arizona and western New Mexico.

WELC attorney Amy Atwood helped expose former U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Deputy Assistant Secretary Julie MacDonald’s subversion of the Endangered Species Act.  Now, we are working to clean up the mess MacDonald left behind.  After she resigned, the FWS agreed to reconsider listing as endangered several species that MacDonald had denied for political purposes.  However, the roundtail and headwater chubs were left off the reconsider list.

WELC attorneys have worked for years to protect the chubs, which are important indicator species for their current and historic habitat in the rivers of eastern Arizona and western New Mexico. The impacts from excessive livestock grazing, dams, and logging threaten their survival.

Attorney Matt Kenna filed suit causing the FWS to add the chubs to the reconsider list for ESA protections.
