Core Grizzly Bear Habitat Protected in Idaho!

In 2006, on behalf of the Alliance for the Wild Rockies, WELC attorneys stopped the Boundary timber sale by filing a lawsuit in federal court. The Boundary sale would have allowed intrusive, helicopter logging in “core” habitat for the highly endangered population of grizzly bears that lives in the Selkirk Mountains.

After WELC attorneys filed a lawsuit challenging the sale and sought preliminary injunctive relieve, the Forest Service withdrew the sale, and the parties reached a settlement agreement requiring the Forest Service to comply with statutory procedures of the Endangered Species Act before moving forward with the sale. At the behest of timber interests, the Forest Service insisted on allowing the timber sale contract to remain in place pending its completion of consultation procedures under the Endangered Species Act, thereby hindering its ability to make an objective determination of the impacts to the bears from helicopter logging. The Forest Service is expected to complete the procedures mandated by the settlement agreement and the Endangered Species Act in 2007.
