John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry have released a best-selling book, This Moment On Earth, that documents everyday Americans who have quietly and passionately worked to protect our environment, folks like the Western Environmental Law Center’s client Helen Reddout of CARE and our fight to protect the citizens and communities of the Yakima River basin from the noxious impacts of out of control industrial dairies.

The book chronicles the travels of Senator John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry across the country in a national campaign to see first-hand how environmental issues unite people across party and ideological lines. From the San Juan Basin to the Gulf of Mexico to the South Bronx, from mothers on Cape Cod to Colorado ranchers and Yakima Valley orchardists, they found a vibrant coalition of people and communities deploying ingenuity, technology, and sheer willpower to save the world they know and love.

One of those heroes is Helen Reddout, a passionate defender of her home and community, the Yakima Valley in south central Washington State. Helen, a sixteenth generation farmer, spearheaded local citizens’ efforts to control the water and air pollution stemming from the industrial dairies that had moved into the valley. When citizen pressure on the dairies and the government agencies failed, Helen turned to the law and Charlie Tebbutt, a staff attorney at the Western Environmental Law Center. A stunning series of victories ensued, and along with it a start on cleaning up the Yakima Valley and far reaching legal precedent protecting all American’s right to clean water. As Helen states in the book, “without the Western Environmental Law Center’s help and expertise, we would not have been able to do what we did.”
