Protecting Public Health and the Environment from Big Dairies
Confined animal feedlots, in this case Big Dairies with over 2,000 cows crammed into pens of a few acres, excrete tremendous amounts of manure (120 lbs/day per cow). WELC is working with several organizations to require the EPA and states to regulate these facilities to protect public health and the environment.
Confined animal feedlots, in this case Big Dairies with over 2,000 (sometimes 10, 20 or even 50 thousand cows) cows crammed into pens of a few acres, excrete tremendous amounts of manure (120 lbs/day per cow). The hazardous air pollutants that come from the manure and waste storage are literally staggering. Ammonia, Hydrogen Sulfide, Methane and other toxic gasses are constantly being emitted into the communities around these facilities. Currently they are totally unregulated. Neighbors and workers are suffering from health problems from these highly concentrated fumes and they make life unbearable for the neighbors within miles of these facilities. We are working with CARE (WA), Amargosa Citizens for the Environment (NV), and others in WA, ID, CA, NV, OR to require the EPA and states to regulate these facilities to protect public health and the environment.
