Challenging Government Abdication of Duty to Recover Mexican Wolf

We are working to encourage the successful recovery of the Mexican wolf, by getting the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to re-assume responsibility for recovery it abdicated to the states of Arizona and New Mexico.

Despite a 10-year reintroduction and recovery effort, the Mexican wolf is no closer to recovery than when the program began.  That is due in large measure to the fact that rather than take charge of recovery as required by the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has abdicated this duty to the states of Arizona and New Mexico, allowing them veto power over measures necessary to effect recovery, and to insist that wolves deemed to be problem animals killed even though they are essentially baited by certain irresponsible livestock operators.  WELC is representing a coalition seeking to get FWS to regain its authority to stop this improper killing of wolves and to otherwise take steps necessary for the lobo’s recovery.
